What Is A Wheel Alignment For?
I am sure you have pushed a shopping cart or stroller at some point where the wheels appear to be working against one another.
Making it roll along takes lots more effort. Unfortunately, although with a shopping cart you can feel their wheels fighting you, on your car you aren’t always aware that this is occurring. Fortunately, there are signs of it if you know what you should be looking for.
Vehicle alignment is a very complicated subject that covers a wide variety of parts and terms. Wheels that are out of alignment means that the tires aren’t pointing in the proper direction. It affects the durability, safety, suspension and steering of your tires as well as all of the parts that control them.
How does a car lose its alignment?
Some of the more common ways of knocking your alignment out are bumping into a concrete parking stall, hitting the curb and pot holes. However, wear and tear are the most common reason. As cars grow older, ball and socket joints get looser, and rubber components begin to lose their elasticity or start to crack. They begin to give a bit more, and progressively get worse over time.
If I don’t get the wheels on my car aligned what will happen?
If your tires are not aligned properly, they will wear down much more quickly and cost you more money over the lifetime of your car. Your fuel consumption will also increase since the tires aren’t rolling as smoothly as they should be. Also, a slight dragging effect will develop that causes your car’s engine to have to work harder. Another thing is your car won’t be able to handle as it has been designed to. It could get to the point that you will have a hard time maintaining control of your vehicle.
How frequently should my alignment be checked? We recommend that you get an Alignment Check performed along with every other oil change you do. Over 10,000 kilometers a lot can happen. You drive down gravel roads, through potholes, or even worse, your wheels knock the curb as you are making turns. These things can all impact how your tires sit, and their alignment can be thrown off instantly.
The longer you put off getting your wheels aligned, the more damage may take place. If you haven’t had an alignment in awhile, it time to get a checkup.
