5 Maintenance Tips For Your Car During Winter

5 Maintenance Tips For Your Car During Winter

Everybody hates going out during the winter months. But, just like the conditions are tough on us, so are they on our vehicles. Let’s look at some car care tips for winter driving.

For many drivers, winter driving spells a lot of challenges like icy roads, salted streets, heavy snow, and freezing temperatures. What’s the best way to make sure that your car can keep rolling through the difficult winter months?

1. Visibility

Winter driving comes with post-2one major hazard, the sun sets a bit earlier in the day, meaning there’s less daylight especially when you commute back home. In this case, it’s wise to do all you can to ensure all your vehicle lights are in great working condition, to provide the brightest possible illumination they possibly can.

Fix any worn-out bulbs before winter starts, and if remove any snow covering exterior lights before you set out to drive. If there are yellow or foggy lights, it’s a good idea to replace them or find an easy restoration kit.

2. Coolantpost-3

Antifreeze, also known as coolant is very beneficial to your car since it helps to prevent the engine  from freezing in the cold winter temperatures. Before winter starts, make sure that your vehicle isn’t low on coolant, and check to see if there are any other leaks from the engine that would drain out the coolant. Most mechanics usually recommend a 50/50 mix of coolant and water, which helps to lower the engine freeing point further.

3.Washer fluipost-4d and Gasoline

What do washer fluid and gasoline have in common? Well, these are the two most crucial automotive items you should always keep full in winter. Yo
u should always try to have a full tank for a number of reasons, such as preventing accumulated water from freezing inside the fuel pump, and will also help you to stay warm, as it allows the engine to keep running should you get stuck. Similarly, it’s extremely important to have a full windshield washer reservoir since messy road debris from a snowstorm might require constant windscreen washing.

4.Tires and Tire Pressure

Although all-wheel drive is confidence inspiring during acceleration, it won’t help you when braking and turning. In this case, winter tires are necessary for places where the temperature drops to below 45 degrees, post-5as they’re more capable of keeping their flexibility in low temperatures. They can, therefore, provide improved traction as you turn on a cold pavement or when you’re trying to stop.

In addition, it’s very important to keep track of the tire pressure during the cold seasons. Tire pressure usually drops along with the surrounding air temperature, which could mean unpredictable handling, premature tire wear, or tread separation that could eventually lead to a major accident. Don’t forget to let a little air out as temperatures start to rise in the spring.

                                               5.Check your Battery

post-6The sure way for detecting a faulty or weak battery is with professional equipment. Also, it’s usually more difficult for batteries to operate in cold weather than in warm weather. A volt test on your battery before winter is vital to make sure the battery is working properly. If it’s not, get a new one as soon as you can to avoid being the one stranded in the parking lot
with a car that just won’t start.

Oil Change Prices vary between companies. We all know it’s important to change the oil in your car on a regular basis. Windshield Wipers Servicing and Replacement

Windshield Wipers Servicing and Replacement

It is easy to ignore your windshield wipers until you find yourself needing them. Driving in the rain or snow can be dangerous enough without reduced visibility due to worn our windshield wipers.  Like other car parts, your wipers deteriorate over time and due to use and need to be replaced to ensure optimum visibility. Servicing and Maintaining Battery & Cables

Servicing and Maintaining Battery & Cables

Most people don’t think about their battery or the cables attached to them until they hear that dread “click” and then nothing. Or the sad sound of the engine trying to start and slowly getting weaker.

Battery Cables Need Attention

You may have noticed that batteries are not lasting as long as they used to. The reason for this is that there are far more demands on the battery today because of all the extra electronics gadgets and systems.

Another factor that can shorten the life of your battery is the heat associated with our hot Okanagan summers. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate leading to damage to the internal structure of the battery.

There are some telltale signs that your battery is need of an inspection from your technician.

  • If your vehicle struggles with starting then it might not be holding it’s charge between start-ups. If it eventually starts then it is likely to be a problem with the battery.
  • The lights fade while starting the vehicle or shortly after it has started running can be an indication.
  • There is the clicking sound we mentioned earlier. Clicking without starting is very likely a weak or dead battery problem.
  • Electronic devices such as power windows operating slower than usual, lights and indicators not as bright, etc.

Most batteries won’t last 4 years before needing replacing without proper maintenance.

Along with maintaining your battery you must pay attention to the battery cables too. The typical problems that can interfere with your battery cables doing their job are loose connections, corrosion and breakage.

Your battery cables connect to your battery. If the connection has vibrated loose then this can lead to a weak or intermittent flow of power. It can also affect the charging of the battery.

Corrosion associated with your battery typically is first seen on the battery terminals and the battery cable connections. Left in this condition it can lead to failure to start your engine. It can also cause problems for your vehicle’s onboard computer.

Corroded or internally damaged battery cables can lead to the replacing of other more costly charging components.

What does proper battery and battery cable maintenance consist of?

  • Battery must be clean of all corrosive material.
  • Battery connections must be tight
  • Serviceable battery needs to have the fluid level checked
  • Battery should be tested

Talk to your Car Craft Automotive technician about the condition of your battery and cables. They want your vehicle to start the first time, every time and so do you.

“I went to Car Craft a few years ago BECAUSE I was looking for a car shop that had integrity and offered only services that were needed as cost has always been a factor since I was female and taken advantage of previously by unscrupulous service shops.”

I own a Ford 2004 F350 Diesel and have had terrible experiences with other shops.  After my first experience with Tony and Car Craft, I know I’ve found the right shop.  I get better mileage now which relates to less wear on my vehicle thanks to Car Craft.

Wayne Donecz

Norm at the front desk provides unreal service each and every time. Owner Tony is very professional and friendly. Car Craft is definitely doing their best to become the neighbourhood garage. Great staff, and great work.

Alex Labreque

Norm Grube is knowledgeable & trustworthy.

Murray Neuman

Shirley Gordon

I got a recommendation from the local Napa parts dealer for Car Craft to help me with my check engine light coming on while I was visiting my parents in Kelowna from Puyallup, Washington. I was leaving to go home the next morning over the Coquihalla Pass Highway. It was after 3 pm when I pulled in. They took great care of me and had the problem diagnosed and the light turned off and I was on my way just after 4 pm. Fantastic people with a great attitude to help you.Hats off to these folks it’s not about the money to them it’s all about taking care of you.

Norm has been very professional.

Bob & Lynn Houle

Fast, friendly service. I did not feel bamboozled by these guys – they explained what I needed to have done and were great about telling me the work that was not necessary. I really appreciated that. I think women can rest assured that they are not getting ripped off when the bring their cars in on their own. That is a real concern for a lot of us.

I found the staff to be friendly, professional and extremely competent. I would have no hesitation to recommend them to others. I will be using their services again in the future.

Rob, Norm, Tony and their crew are as professional and trustworthy as I have seen in any profession. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to look after my vehicles. Both my wife and I take our personal and work vehicles to CarCraft. We are very grateful for their outstanding service.

Well done and great service

Frank Sebastian

Friendly staff and very knowledgeable
