Summer is here and it is time to head out on the road, whether it is to the local mall, up to the mountains or the Coquihalla Highway, your vehicle needs to be in top shape, especially your brakes. Your brakes are one of the largest safety features of your vehicle and obviously one of the most important. Before you head out on the road, here are a few things your mechanic should check.

Brake Pads, Rotors, and Calipers

Even if your brakes seem fine, it is always a good idea to have your brake pads, rotors, and calipers checked before taking any type of road trip. While your brake pads contain a metal strip that lets out an audible squeak when the pads get low, you do not want to hear that in the middle of a jaunt down a mountain road. Your mechanic will also check your rotors for wear and your calipers for sticking or leaks to be sure all moving parts of your brakes are working properly.

If your brake pads and rotors both need to be replaced, make sure you do both at the same time, so you have fresh surfaces on both the pads and rotors for the best stopping power.

Brake Lines and Master Cylinder

When you take your vehicle in for a check, your mechanic will also check over all your brake lines and master cylinder to check for any leaks or issues. As your brake system is closed and pressurized, there should never be any loss of fluid unless there is a leak or a problem with the master cylinder. Always let your mechanic know if you have ever had to put brake fluid in the master cylinder, have seen any leaks or ever had your brake pedal go all the way to the floor.
